About the event
Pre-Contact (Open-Field Tackling) training is designed to develop one of the most critical — and most challenging — skills in football: making tackles in space. This phase of tackling determines whether a defender arrives fast and under control or late and out of position.
Our training emphasizes closing space quickly while maintaining leverage, balance, and body control. Athletes are taught how to take proper pursuit angles, keep their eyes disciplined, and avoid over-pursuit that leads to missed tackles and explosive plays. We break down how to track the ball carrier, stay square in open space, and force the runner into disadvantageous positions.
Through detailed instruction and progressive drills, athletes learn how to arrive under control, react to movement and obstacles, and position themselves to execute safe, effective tackles. This training builds confidence in open-field situations and directly improves tackling efficiency on game day.
