My goal is to give you my perspective as a mom and wife as I offered and continue to offer support and guidance from the sideline as their #1 Fan.
“As a mother of an athlete, especially that of a football player, we play a role no one else can play in his sports career. My plan is to give you my perspective as a mom and wife as I offered and continue to offer support and guidance from the sideline as their #1 Fan.”
You hear us, dressed in our "football mom" t-shirts, pulling ice chests full of halftime snacks, carts full of pom poms and pads, and being the 12th man - cheering louder than the team cheerleaders. When the last second runs off the clock, the 5th quarter begins - we mend wounds (and sometimes egos), clean cleats, wash uniforms, collaborate on team chats, plan the next team dinner, and most of all get ready for the next game. We ARE Football Moms!!
I AM A FOOTBALL MOM
I’ve been in football for 15 years – no, not as a player, coach, or member of the board, but as a player’s mom, team mom, coach’s wife, and the mother of a cheer coach. I have been on the sideline and in the stands, supporting my husband on every level from semi-pro team owner to coach of every age level. I remember the first and last day my oldest son stepped on the field and saw the hard work and discipline carry over into his career. I have watched my youngest son put on his first pads, go from trying to be like his older brother, to starting his high school football career this year. I have sat with my daughter in the stands for EVERY game while practicing her own dance routines for dance competition and watched her fall in love with cheer coaching. I have checked emails, washed uniforms, cooked team dinners, nursed injuries (physically and mentally), helped other moms through this process… the list goes on – I AM A FOOTBALL MOM!!!
When asked for my perspective, I first hesitated because I really didn’t know what to say. Even while writing I wrote, deleted, wrote, and deleted again. My perspective on this game is different. Being the mother of boys that don’t know the meaning of CAN’T when it comes to this game. It has forced me to balance their need for my love, with their need for strong, motivating female advice. I’ve learned when to be hands-on and when to step back.
My goal has always remained consistent: Help them be strong, determined, hardworking, caring men - most importantly, HEALTHY AND SAFE. As a mother of an athlete, especially that of a football player, we play a role no one else can play in his sports career. This is evident in the relationships you see on TV during games and interviews!! My plan is to give you my perspective as a mom and wife as I offered and continue to offer support and guidance from the sideline as their #1 Fan.
